This is a teaching blog about more than drawing. It is about seeing. Drawing comes up often because it is one of the most direct mark-making techniques — closer to the essence of things, and therefore closer to the mission of transforming how we see the world and, in turn, transforming ourselves.

Teaching techniques is well and good, but techniques are not an end in themselves. They are a starting point for the adventure. In my own work, sometimes I use them. Sometimes I do not. I believe in learning them the right way first — and then remixing them, breaking them apart, putting them back together, or leaving them in a cardboard box on the corner marked “free” for someone else to pick up.

Techniques are the gateway that help us slow down and see. Once we can see better, we can exchange the technique for the seeing.

Hopefully this blog is of use to you in your own adventure — to see ever more clearly, and to become ever more yourself.
