Process: Studies by Bronzino, Tintoretto, Titian, Carpaccio & Durer

Titian, sheet of pen studies for Saint Sebastian, multiple poses of the bound figure

A selection of paired images — finished paintings alongside the drawings and studies that led to them — from Bronzino, Carpaccio, Dürer, Tintoretto, and Titian. Looking at the process work next to the resolved painting makes clear how much of the final image was already decided in the drawing: pose, weight, the placement of a hand. The grids on several of these sheets show the artist squaring up a drawing to transfer it directly onto the panel or canvas.
