While the term Notan is a Japanese design concept, the actual working of notan — a dynamic presence of positive and negative space — can be found the world over in all cultures and times. Here are some examples that caught my eye. In each case the negative space presses into the positive space — makes its presence felt — as powerfully as the positive space. The interlocking of these two agents is the essence of notan.
